Quick Facts About Microsuction

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is a procedure where ear wax is removed using a small, thin suction tube connected to a suction machine, while being viewed through a microscope. It’s precise, dry, and considered the safest method of ear wax removal.

Why is it the gold standard?

Microsuction is considered the gold standard because it doesn’t introduce water into the ear (reducing infection risk), provides clear visualisation of the ear canal, and is generally more comfortable and safer than traditional methods.

Who can benefit?

Anyone experiencing symptoms of ear wax blockage can benefit, including those with hearing difficulties, ear discomfort, tinnitus, or a feeling of fullness in the ear. It’s suitable for most adults and children over 5 years old.

When to seek help?

You should seek professional help if you’re experiencing hearing loss, ear pain, tinnitus, dizziness, or if you’ve tried over-the-counter remedies without success. Also, if you have a history of ear surgery or perforations, professional care is essential.

Services

What we treat

Microsuction is a safe and effective method for quick and precise ear cleaning, especially for people with hearing devices or a history of ear problems.

You may benefit from seeing a microsuction specialist if you have blocked ears or hearing loss (particularly if it’s sudden or worsening), earache, discomfort, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing), vertigo or balance issues, itchiness or a feeling of fullness in the ear .

It is also recommended for hearing aid users, those with narrow or curved ear canals, anyone with a history of ear surgery or perforated eardrums (as microsuction is safer than irrigation), and for people who have tried home remedies like olive oil drops without relief after several days.

The Procedure

Microsuction (Microscope and suction) is a safe, modern method used to remove earwax, debris, or foreign material from the ear canal. Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction uses a gentle suction device and is typically done under direct visualization with a microscope. The microscope we use is hospital grade and found typically in many Harley Street Clinics.

Preparation

Before your visit, please avoid using ear drops if you have a known perforated eardrum or an ear infection, check with your clinician first.

Do not insert objects into your ears, as this can push wax deeper, cause injury, or lead to infection. It is important to let us know if you have a history of ear infections or surgery, a perforated eardrum, tinnitus or hearing loss, or if you have a cochlear implant or other ear devices.

What to expect

During the procedure, you will sit comfortably in a chair while the clinician uses a microscope and gentle suction device to remove the wax. The entire process usually takes around 15-20 minutes.
